How the world's biggest startup company does startup development.

So many people ask me questions about what makes working with the Apple Design Team such an exceptional experience. In this presentation, I share how critical insight development and execution is to the formation of every product in 4 Phases.

Human Futures Planning can be broken down into four phases of development.

01 Foresight Gathering
02 Scenario Development
03 Strategic Design
04 Implementing Tomorrow

01 Foresight gathering

The foresight gathering phase is a deep dive into predictive trend analysis and understanding the interplay between human behavior and technology. It's where we collect and interpret data to anticipate future challenges and opportunities, setting the stage for informed, innovative planning.

02 Scenario Development

During the scenario development phase, insights from foresight gathering take shape into tangible narratives. We construct diverse, detailed scenarios that not only envision possible futures but also challenge our assumptions, encouraging creative solutions and strategic resilience in our planning process.

03 Strategic Design

In the strategic design phase, we translate our scenarios into actionable strategies, designing flexible plans to navigate the myriad of potential futures. This is a critical stage where foresight is turned into practical roadmaps that aim to meet core objectives while remaining adaptable to the unpredictable dynamics of change.

In this phase we welcome constant reminders that excellence in planning, much like in hockey, is not just about responding to the present but also about being strategically positioned for what comes next, ensuring that our plans are as dynamic and forward-thinking as the shifts in society they aim to navigate.

Human Futures Planning stages typically never exceed more than 3 years. 5 years out is typically is too far away to predict what will happen but a 2-3 year window allows us to build with an end in sight.

Here is a sample project kickoff to give you an idea of what takes place within the first month of development. We leave ourselves very little room to breath, it's time to get excited about how we want to enrich people's lives.

Every strategic plan requires resource allocations that allow for us to launch on time without pushing out the production schedule.

Once a general direction is decided upon engineering will begin building service frameworks to support the effort, leaving a little wiggle room for minor design changes to be made at the last minute (if necessary).

Once Quality Assurance has had a chance to conduct some thorough usability evaluations, feedback will be sent back to the designer in the form of usability enhancements (bugs) to improve upon things he or she may have overlooked.

04 Implementing Tomorrow

Finally, after much consideration and endurance testing company-wide design changes will get locked into a finalized date to go live with the new product or service for a special unveiling and packaging into a Keynote script for a 'One more thing...' announcement, describing how each feature adds value to the quality of life of the people we design for.
